From Vision Pro to Smart Glasses: Apple’s Roadmap for Virtual Reality Dominance

Apple’s ambitious plans for the virtual and augmented reality market are taking shape, with several new devices in development over the next few years. Despite the lukewarm reception of the expensive Vision Pro, priced at $3,500, the company remains committed to expanding its presence in this sector.

Upcoming VR/AR Devices

Apple Vision Pro

Vision Pro Successor

Apple is working on a follow-up to the Vision Pro, expected to feature an upgraded “M” series chip for improved performance. This device is slated for release in 2026.

Affordable VR Headset

A more budget-friendly VR headset is in the pipeline, aimed at attracting a wider user base. This model will likely use:

  • An “A” series chipset (possibly the A18 Pro)
  • Plastic components instead of aluminum
  • Fewer advanced features compared to the Vision Pro

Apple anticipates sales of this cheaper model to double those of the Vision Pro, with a potential launch in 2025.

Smart Glasses

In 2027, Apple plans to introduce smart glasses, possibly similar to Meta’s recently unveiled prototype.

Other Innovative Products

AirPods with Cameras

Apple is exploring the concept of AirPods equipped with cameras. These could potentially:

  • Capture data for AI processing
  • Assist users in daily activities

However, this project is still in the early stages and may not come to fruition for at least three years, if at all.

Strategic Importance

Apple’s significant investment in Vision Pro technology underscores its commitment to the VR/AR market. The company aims to leverage this technology across multiple devices to justify the substantial development costs and establish a strong foothold in the evolving landscape of immersive experiences.
